Organize the process of self-discovery and exploration of various professional areas
Before choosing a proper profession, you should know more about yourself. Your values, interests, skills and abilities combined with your personality type make some professions appropriate to you and others inappropriate. Use all available self-assessment tools: career tests and consultations with specialists.
Assessing your abilities and skills, you should draw up the widest list of professions that can be appropriate to you.
You can divide them into the following categories:
• well-known (promising or out-of-date)
• little-known (new to me and state-of-the-art to all)
• interesting (correspond to my interests and values)
• uninteresting (what I can do, but don’t want to do)
• profitable (highly paid, scarce)
Number of professions in the list: 10-20
ВSelect professions related to your abilities, values (interests) and skills (current ones and those you have a talent for) out of the list.
Thus, you should monitor available job descriptions in public sources: requirements, obligations, working conditions (schedule, salary).
Number of professions in the list: 2-5
When your list contains only a few professions, arrange meetings with people holding positions you’re interested in. Don’t hesitate to ask your friends or professionals for support. They can provide first-hand knowledge of the career path in your short list. Look for published interviews with specialists whose positions are interesting to you
Finally, completing all explorations, you are probably ready to make a choice. Select a profession that you think will make you happy based on all the information about yourself and this profession. Keep in mind that many people change professions throughout their lives. Therefore, reserve the right to change your mind.
